Wall Sconce

Pierced at both ends, glass in between. The body of the sconce is a clear cylinder of vertically fluted glass; the flutes refract the light into separate lines, so that lit it reads not as one bright face but as a row of filaments standing side by side.

A brass band wraps each end of the cylinder, and these bands are pierced by hand: interlocking scrolls, heart-shaped tips, a symmetrical motif at the centre. The flat, cool surface of the glass meets the worked warmth of the metal exactly here — the whole character of the lamp comes from that contrast.

The back plate is left plain: a flat rectangular brass sheet two centimetres thick. That plainness is what lets the pierced bands carry the piece. Its surface also gathers the light spilling past the glass and returns a soft reflection to the wall.

The light stands as a vertical line, spreading evenly up and down without striking the eye. That makes it easy to live with beside mirrors, at bedsides and along corridors.

Antique brass patina is a special finish worked onto the metal: dark inside the pierced bands, lighter across the plain plate, deepening over the years.

At home beside mirrors, in bathrooms and dressing rooms, at bedsides, in hotel rooms and corridors, stairwells and narrow walls. At 30 cm tall and 10 cm deep it takes no room in a passage.
