A wall sconce worked in relief. Relief gives a different result from piercing: the light does not pass through the body, it grazes across the surface. The raised parts of the pattern hold shadow and the hollows stay bright — which means it is the light itself that makes the pattern visible.
So when it is lit, what it leaves on the wall is not a patch of light but the impression of a surface you could touch. That is why relief work has been used in Moroccan lighting for centuries.
The relief is raised by hammering the metal from behind and trueing it from the front. Every blow is struck by hand, so no two pieces carry the pattern at exactly the same depth. The finish is antique brass — a patina worked into the metal rather than a plating.
It suits living rooms, dining rooms, corridors, entrance halls and stairwell walls. Relief reads most clearly against stone, timber and dark-coloured walls.
Bulb not included.
Available made to measure in other sizes and colours. Handmade in Istanbul since 1984.
