Wall Sconce, Flush Mount

A single forty-centimetre sheet of metal, beaten into a dome. The whole surface is made of thousands of hammer marks; the light breaks across these hollows and never sits at the same brightness twice.

At the centre of the dome is a round medallion cut by laser. The pattern follows the order of classical Ottoman rumi work: interlacing curved stems and the spaces left between them. The light behind passes only through this opening and throws the pattern itself onto the wall and ceiling.

The light that escapes past the rim spreads outward in four directions. The sconce is therefore as much an arrangement of shadow as of light: a bright medallion at the centre, and a halo breaking into four arms around it.

The dome is held to the wall by four clips cut from hammered brass. They are not concealed; how the piece is fixed is part of the design.

The antique brass finish is a patina applied to the metal; it stays dark in the hollows of the beaten surface and light on the ridges. It deepens with time and gives the piece a character of its own over the years.

Each piece is beaten one at a time in our workshop. Size, pattern, finish and light arrangement vary with the order, and the piece is prepared differently for interior or sheltered exterior use.
