Here the lantern hangs out from the wall on the end of a curved arm. The arm is bent by hand from a single brass tube and anchored by two separate fluted rosettes, so it carries the 62 cm body without a tremor. The lantern rests free at its tip — the stance of old garden and courtyard lanterns.
The whole cylindrical body is pierced to the fineness of lace. The pattern is built from thousands of dots, large and small: interlocking rosette wheels across the centre, ordered borders at either end. Lit, those holes throw a wide, glowing ring of pattern onto the wall — the light does not arrive directly, but through the pattern.
A pierced cap and a turned finial sit above; below, a swollen bowl cut with the same craft carries a pointed finial. The pierced ornament hanging from its tip sways at the least breath of wind.
Antique brass patina is a special finish worked onto the metal: dark along the pierced edges, lighter across the open surfaces. Outdoors it deepens over the years and the piece takes on a character of its own.
At home on garden and courtyard walls, hotel entrances and façades, terraces and poolsides, beside doors and along wide corridors. The curved arm holds the lantern 28 cm clear of the wall, so the light reaches both the wall and the ground.
Made one at a time in our workshop. Size, pattern, colour and light layout change to order.
