Wall Sconce

Three parts share the work in this sconce. The cylindrical opal shade at the centre is what lights the room: the surface glows evenly along its full length, the bulb is invisible from every angle, and nothing dazzles. The domed cap above and the swelling base below are pierced throughout; the light escaping there leaves two patterned halos on ceiling and wall. The fine pierced bands at either end of the shade tie the two behaviours together.

The shade is made not of glass but of **acrylic**. We treat that as a choice rather than a compromise: acrylic does not break, it spreads light more evenly than glass, and it lasts for years in the damp, hard-used spaces of hotels, hammams, spas and bathrooms. It also carries no risk in transport or installation.

The mounting is plain: a straight arm from the wall, a cross pin through which the lantern hangs, and a fluted round plate. The lantern stands twenty-four centimetres off the wall, so the light from the pierced cap finds room to spread.

The antique brass finish is a patina applied to the metal; it stays dark inside the pierced bands and light on the plain surfaces. It deepens with time and gives the piece a character of its own over the years.

It is used in hotel rooms and bathrooms, spa and hammam areas, corridors, entrance halls and beside mirrors. Set as a pair on either side of a mirror it lights a face without shadow.

Each piece is made one at a time in our workshop. Size, pattern, finish and light arrangement vary with the order.
