Wall Sconce, Flush Mount

A brass dome of twenty-five centimetres, sitting flush against the ceiling. The whole surface is pierced; the pattern is not a geometry but a branch: thin limbs parting from thicker stems, with thousands of small leaf-shaped openings between them. Towards the centre the pattern tightens into a six-armed star.

The light passes not through glass but straight through these cuts. What reaches the ceiling is not brightness but the shadow of branches: lit, a texture forms around the fitting as though one were standing beneath a tree. The room is lit, yet the source of the light is nowhere obvious.

The hammered drop below and the finial at its tip are the only three-dimensional detail on the plain dome; they also mark its centre and balance the fine pierced band running around the rim.

It does not hang. At seventeen centimetres overall it suits low ceilings, corridors, dressing rooms, bathrooms and entrance halls. Several set in a row build a repeating shadow pattern across a ceiling.

The antique brass finish is a patina applied to the metal; it stays dark inside the cuts and light on the surface, bringing the branches forward. It deepens with time and gives the piece a character of its own over the years.

Each piece is pierced one at a time in our workshop. Size, pattern, finish and light arrangement vary with the order; a different diameter or another tone of patina can be produced to order.
