Table Lamp

A light held in place by its own weight.

The height of this lamp is set by a weight, not a screw. The cord carrying the shade runs over two pulleys — one at the end of the arm, one on the column — and a brass counterweight hangs from its end. Pull the shade down and it stays where you leave it; push it up and the weight descends. The mechanism is that simple, and it is the same one workshop lamps used a century ago.

The cranked arm joins the column on a pivot and carries a conical shade. The light falls straight onto the page; raise or lower the shade and the pool it makes widens or narrows. The column is plain, finished at the top with a spear-point finial. The base is stepped and heavy — the balance the pulley needs comes from there.

The finish is antique brass, worked by hand; each body carries its own tone.

Dimensions: 60 cm overall, 47 cm column, 35 cm arm reach. Shade 15 cm across, 9.5 cm deep. Base 18 cm across.
