Table Lamp

A Moroccan-patterned table lamp stands as an object when it is off; lit, it does the work it was made for. The light escaping the pierced body throws the pattern itself across the table and the wall behind it. What is lit in the room is not the surface but that pattern.

The body is made in metal and finished in antique brass. The surface is not a plating; it is built up with a chemical patina and hand sanding, and it darkens over time. Once the pattern is cut, every edge is trued by hand — skip that step and the light breaks hard and unevenly along the openings.

It is made for atmosphere rather than task light; this is not a reading or working lamp. It suits a console, a bookshelf, a mantelpiece, a bedside table or a hotel room, and it is at its best as the only source left on when the main light goes off in the evening.

Bulb not included; a low-wattage warm white lamp shows the pattern most clearly.
