A tall hexagonal lantern tapering downward. Interlocking star geometry — girih — runs around the shoulder and the skirt; this pattern is not drawn freehand but constructed to a rule, and that rule has not changed in centuries.
Girih is built by repeating and rotating a few base polygons. The maker's work is not to invent the pattern but to apply the rule correctly: let one angle drift and the pattern fails to close after a few repeats, and the error only appears at the end of the body. That is why the first panel's setting-out is the critical stage in girih work.
At the centre of each main panel a pointed mihrab arch is left open. The star net around it is dense while the arch itself is entirely clear: there the light leaves uninterrupted, as one warm surface. Set density beside emptiness and the pattern declares itself.
Ø35 cm across, roughly 90 cm tall. Adapted to the height of the room.
Antique brass — a patina worked into the metal, not a plating. A blue-glass version is also made.
Suited to: entrance halls, corridors, stairwells, mosques, hotel lobbies, arcades, restaurants
Bulb not included. Made in our own Istanbul workshop since 1984.
