Chandelier

A pear-shaped body built from eight panels. Each begins with milk-white opal glass; over it sits a cut brass filigree. This is the opposite method to a pierced lantern — the pattern does not emerge from the light, it stands in front of it.

What you get is dark lace laid over an illuminated white ground. The surface glows evenly end to end, the lamp is never visible, and the shadow thrown on the wall is the silhouette of the metal itself. Scalloped arches close the lower edge; a pierced dome caps the top, a tulip-form finial the base.

Ø40 cm, approximately 70 cm tall. Chain made to the room.

Antique brass patina. The filigree is cut by hand, the glass set panel by panel.

Setting the lattice in front of the glass adds a step in production: the glass panel is seated first, then the cut lattice has to go over it with no gap between the two. Let the lattice shift by a millimetre and the shadow goes soft.

The antique brass surface is not a plating but a patina worked into the metal, and it darkens over time.
