A three-tier Ottoman chandelier that reads as an eight-point star when seen from below. A wide carved ring sits at the top, a band of hexagonal panels at the middle, and a pointed domed lantern beneath.

The three tiers do three different jobs. The upper ring throws light onto the ceiling and the dome above — in a mosque or a large hall the ceiling itself is lit. The middle band sends light outward to the walls. The lower lantern brings it straight down to the floor. A single-tier fitting can do only one of the three.

Every surface is covered in hand-worked rumi and palmette carving. The rumi is the curving animal motif of Seljuk and Ottoman ornament; the palmette is a fan-shaped leaf. Used together, the pattern carries both movement and order.

Opal glass panels behind the carving filter the light into a warm brightness that never dazzles. Unlit the piece reads dark and textured; lit, it fills the ceiling with pattern.
