Wall Sconce

A small piece, densely worked. The face of the half-cylinder brass body is covered end to end in curling Moroccan arabesque: spiralling stems, leaf tips, edges that open like fans. The pattern is first raised in a die, then the openings are pierced one by one. The surface is therefore never flat — each motif stands at its own height and builds its own shadow under the light.

A hand-hammered bead border runs along the top and bottom edges. The row frames the body and stiffens the rim; the serrated finish above makes plain that the piece was cut by hand.

The body is open at top and bottom. Light washes the wall in two beams, up and down, while the light filtering through the embossed face leaves a wide, shadowed pattern across it. Small as it is, it covers a great deal of wall.

Antique brass patina is a special finish worked onto the metal: dark inside the embossed lines, lighter on the raised crests, deepening over the years.

At home in corridors, stairwells, hotel rooms, reception and restaurant walls, beside doors, on garden and eaves walls. At 30 cm it sits comfortably on narrow walls and between niches; set in a row, it builds a continuing rhythm of light.
