The plainest piece in the series. A square body with its corners chamfered into an octagon, each face holding milk-white opal glass in a slim brass frame. There is not a single carving on the body.

Chamfering the corners softens a square without rounding it. A sharp square reads hard in a room and a circle reads characterless; the octagon sits between them. The chamfers also release light from eight directions instead of four.

All the ornament is gathered at three points: the stepped brass cornice above, the pierced finial the chain attaches to, and the links of the chain itself. The body stays quiet instead of carrying all of it.

This is the lantern for a room that is already full. Patterned wallpaper, a timber ceiling, a rug — where those are, a carved lantern is too much; this one is not.

The opal glass hides the lamp completely and never dazzles from below.

30 × 30 cm, body height 45 cm, 80 cm overall with the chain. Chain length set to the room.

Antique brass — a hand-worked patina, not a plating.

Suited to: corridors, entrance halls, kitchen islands, dining tables, bathrooms, hotel rooms, studies
