Section

Outdoor

A rectangular body under an arched crown that spills outward at the sides. The crown is wider than the body and hangs past its edges, giving the piece the character of a headdress — almost a helmet.

The whole surface is clad in metal scales. Each scale is cut individually and soldered by hand so that it overlaps the one before — like fish scales, in an order that runs downward. Thousands of them keep the surface from reading as one flat tone: each catches the light from its own angle, and the piece shifts through the day and through the night.

The front and side faces are closed with opal panels. The light comes from within and the scales stay unlit; the opal face glows while the scaled texture around it holds as a dark frame. At night the inside of the arch shines and its outside shows itself by texture alone.

The arched crown throws rain clear and keeps light from escaping to the sky. The base seats the body and is anchored down. The paint is a custom finish prepared for outdoor conditions and holds up in salt air and sun.

For poolsides, seaside terraces, garden paths, villa entrances and hotel grounds. On coastal projects the scaled texture speaks to the surface of the water itself.
