Section

Table Lamp

An upright plate with a circle cut from its centre. In front of that circle a second disc turns on two pins. Rotate the disc by hand and the light slowly closes or opens — like phases of the moon. That is the whole mechanism of Orbit: no switch, no dial, no remote.

Closed, the disc covers the circle exactly and the lamp reads as unlit. As it turns, a thin crescent appears, then a half circle, then a full round of light. Every angle between is its own level of brightness; there are endless positions between the two ends.

Plate and disc are cut from the same sheet and take the same patina. The cutting and sanding marks left on the surface are deliberate; the piece does not hide how it was made.

Two feet hold the plate upright on the table. Apart from the body, no additional part is visible; the cable leaves from behind.

The antique brass finish is a patina applied to the metal; it deepens with time and lightens naturally where the hand turns the disc, giving the piece a character of its own over the years.

Orbit is made one at a time in our workshop. Size, finish and light arrangement vary with the order; a different plate size or another tone of patina can be produced to order.
