Wall Sconce

A picture light's job is not to be looked at but to let the picture be seen. So there is no ornament here: a plain forty-centimetre brass bar, two swan-neck arms carrying it, and a rectangular plate against the wall.

The light source is set inside the bar and cannot be seen from outside. What appears when it is lit is a single horizontal line of light; that line washes the painting evenly from top to bottom, leaving no hotspot or glare on the canvas. The frame casts no shadow across the image.

The two swan-neck arms are joined by collared pivots; the angle of the bar is turned by hand. The same fitting therefore works above a small engraving, a wide oil painting, or a bathroom mirror.

The plate is rectangular and fixed with two screws; the cable runs inside. Apart from the brass body, no plastic part is visible.

The antique brass finish is a patina applied to the metal; it deepens with time, lightens naturally where hands rest, and gives the piece a character of its own over the years.

Each piece is made one at a time in our workshop. Length, finish and light colour vary with the order; a longer or shorter bar can be produced to order.
