Flush Mount

This fixture is built in two steps. Above sits a profiled octagonal skirt against the ceiling; below, a glass body steps out from it and tapers downward. That step lifts the piece out of the flat box pressed to the ceiling and makes it a volume that stands apart and casts its own shadow.

Eight side panels and one wide lower panel are frosted opal glass. Opal shows the bulb from no angle; the light leaves the whole surface at an even, unglaring brightness. The side panels wash the ceiling and the upper walls while the broad lower panel carries the general light of the room — two ways of working from a single fixture, indirect and direct at once.

The frame profiles are drawn by hand and joined at the corners; the turned thumb nuts holding the glass are left in view. The panels come out, and can be replaced one at a time years later.

Antique brass patina is a special finish worked onto the metal: dark inside the profiles, lighter across the flat faces, deepening over the years.

At home in low-ceilinged living rooms, bedrooms, hotel rooms and corridors, entrance halls, studies and large bathrooms. At 18 cm deep it gives the effect of a chandelier where no pendant can hang.
