Chandelier

A plain drum, with a branch of coral above it and another below. The drum carries no ornament at all — dark metal, flat surface, a polished brass edge. Every bit of attention is handed to the branches.

The branches are cast from moulds. Their surfaces are not smooth; they hold the pitted, irregular grain of real coral. No two are the same.

An opal glass disc sits inside the drum, so the lamp is invisible from every angle and the light falls straight down without shadow. The lower branch hangs into that light and each brass tip picks it up in turn. The upper branch opens toward the ceiling and lifts it slightly.

Ø40 cm, approximately 85 cm including chain.

Casting is a wholly different method from sheet work: the metal is melted, poured into a mould, and the flash cleaned off by hand once it cools. The organic texture of the branches can only be had that way — coral cannot be made by bending sheet.

The contrast between the dark drum and the bright brass branches is deliberate; without a plain ground the texture of the branches would not read.
