Chandelier

The only closed body in the range. Everything else here is pierced; this one lets no light through its walls at all. The surface is the entire subject.

The drum is clad in several hundred hand-cut brass discs, overlapped like roof tiles. Each is patinated separately — some left yellow brass, some taken to silver, some to olive, some to lead. So the surface never settles on one colour: walk across the room and the tones shift, scales catching the light and letting it go in turn.

Light leaves only from below. A scalloped opal glass diffuser, wider than the drum itself, throws a soft shadowless pool onto the table beneath. Four decorative chains gather at a domed canopy.

Ø70 cm. Antique brass patina. Every scale is cut, aged and laid by hand.

Patinating several hundred discs to four different tones, then laying them so the colours fall at random rather than in bands, is the longest stage of the work — an ordered pattern would read as a stripe and lose the effect entirely.

Bulbs not included. Available made to measure in other sizes and colours. Made in our own Istanbul workshop since 1984.
