Ajouré means cutting a pattern clean through the metal and emptying it out. The brass body of this chandelier is worked that way, with crystal glass set behind the openings. The light passes first through the glass and then out through the cut pattern — two refractions laid over each other.

Unlike plain glass, crystal does not simply transmit light; it bends and disperses it. So the pattern thrown onto the wall is never a flat single tone — a faint separation of light shows along its edges.

The patterns are taken from traditional Ottoman motifs. The finish is antique brass — a patina worked into the metal rather than a plating, and it darkens over time.

Ajouré work requires every opening to be trued by hand after cutting. Skip that and the glass will not seat properly and the light breaks badly at the edges.

It suits hotel lobbies, restaurants, generous entrance halls and high-ceilinged living rooms.
